Annoying SQUEAL while engine is started on '98 Cherokee?!?!

It happens when I start my engine and lasts only like 2-3 seconds. It's no real big problem, it just bugs the crap out of me when everyone in the school parking lot is staring over and like wtf?!?

And it seems like it happens more when the vehicle hasn't been started for like 35 minutes or more. It also happened when I was in park and I revved it a little bit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I 2nd the "too loose" diagnosis. Your belt is slipping, thus the squeal. Take a 15mm wrench and slightly loosen the bolt head on the tensioner pulley. It will be up high on the right side as you look at the engine. You'll need a flat wrench to fit it in between the pulley and the fan on the radiator. Anyway, loosen the bolt then use the same 15mm wrench to tighten the bolt to the left of the power steering pump a few turns. Don't forget to go back and tighten the tensioner pulley bolt when you've made the adjustment. I'd give it 3-4 half-turns of the wrench on the first go 'round to see if it stops the chirp. If not, do it again and see how it goes. I'd bet if you're only getting a short chirp now and then your belt has stretched just enough to need a re-tightening.

no the tensioner pulley is the one farthest to the right of that one below the power steering pump. there is a bolt to the left of the pulley that tightens/loosens the belt. find the right wrench to fit the bolt and tighten it down a couple turns, start the jeep and see if it still squeals, if it does repeat until the squeal is gone

nope, go right of that one and the first one up is it. the small one with one bolt right in the middle of it. you will see a bolt head up and to the left of it. there is a bolt that runs behind that pulley that will move the pulley in and out.

I just went outside to tighten mine up. If you want to save some hassle, take the electric fan out and use a socket wrench on the pulley.
