Alternators

What are my options.
What amps is my currently supposed to put out?
I remember somone posting about a swaping a other cars (forget car) that put out 136 amps i believe. Did he just have to replace the alternator or did he have to put in more than just an alternator to handle i assume a bigger amp output.

Thanks
