The All Nighter: From 4.5" to 9.5"

AAAAYYYYYEEEEEdjdakgjndgsmdcvzsr326t4&$^YE5$^$*R^# Thfujh5586!

Little bit excited. I've had a ton of parts laying around my garage for my XJ, but my boyfriend, Derek, and I keep putting off getting them all put on. Finally, Derek had a sudden spurt of motivation before work two days ago, so we just packed up the rear axle, SYE/DS, adj. coil spacers, new leafs & shackles, etc. and headed over to the gas station he works at. Just the fact that we got to work inside in the bays with the big lifts was a relief/huge help. Frank and Jamie [his girlfriend] had passed by and saw my truck up inside on the lift and stopped by, so Frank was there to help too. The rear end went in perfect, so it was expected that we would have a little bit of trouble in the front. We ended up being up until 1.45 at the gas station [after ordering pizza and whatnot].

I was supposed to have about 8" lift total with the shackles and new leafs, but we had decided before starting that since I don't have long arms we'll just get the front at 6.5" and not put in the 2" shackles until I did have long arms and we put in the d44 front. However, the stock shackles and the new leafs were being a *****, so we just threw in the extended ones.

We only wanted to crank about 2" out of the coil spacers to get 6.5" in the front, but Frank put them in with as much lift as they could provide. It sits even, now, but the angles for the arms are alllll ****ed up. We took it for a test drive after Frank and Jamie left, and it had death wobble like NUTS. We thought something was terribly wrong when it wouldn't turn, but we stopped in the 7-11 parking lot and realized: Frank had been putting the track bar back on in the front. He didn't put in the bolt. A lot of things had been lost after Frank got his hands on 'em or been near 'em, but after all of the frustration, at least we found the culprit for that issue. But seriously: it was death wobbling to the point of chirping tires. Scariest thing ever. Haha.

There's actually not even really vibrations. We didn't even put in the SYE & Tom Woods driveshaft. After it was about 1am, we didn't want to be there too much longer, as Derek had work again there at 8am. The front driveshaft'll need to be lengthened it looks like, but for some reason the rear driveshaft actually reaches. We figured we just had to get home that night, so even if the DS blew up in the rear, we could throw it in 4wd.

I'm going to have to go ahead and get longarms pronto. Or make them... if I can find a writeup. I'd rather make 'em. So in the end, I actually have about 9-9.5" of lift. It's GINORMOUS. I painted the rear diff lime green [my color <3]. It just looks ridiculous. Next is the 38" Ground Hawgs, but I want to get in new steering and long arms before anything else.

The only issue I have currently with this entire thing is that my new shocks are Doetsch Techs. And they're huge. Which I like... but... *sniffle*.... my lime green shock boots can't be used with them.

I WILL put up pictures. We're going over to where we left it, at my friend's house, to figure out what size the bolt is so we can get a grade 8, I guess, and throw it in. Soooo-- at that point, I'll snap a couple shots for y'all.

Just figured you'd all like to hear. Maybe.

Not many chics like you out there that get excited about fixing up the truck. We all can agree that there needs to be more of you out there, especially in Connecticut.

I'm hesitant to comment until I see how you got to '9.5 inches of lift' without longarms....

Course that could be part of the DW problem.

What kind of steering setup you running with that much lift?
Kudos for "Gitt'n er done" though!
