Aftermarket Transmission

My wife as a 2001 XJ. The automatic transmission has a dual 1st/2nd position on the shifter. This format is unacceptable for crawling down or climbing up the steep snow packed roads which we live on. I'd like to replace the transmission or if possible modify it so the shifter has a position for 1st and 2nd which it will hold. Can anyone provide insight into a possible solution?

The transmissions shifting is electronically controlled by 2 solenoids.

S1 on, S2 off = 1st
S1 on, S2 on = 2nd
S1 off, S2 on = 3rd
S1 off, S2 off = 4th

S3 is the torque converter lock-up

Using a few simple electronic parts you can build a shift controller and hold the transmission in any gear.

Or you can buy and install one of these.

Any of these solutions will trigger the check engine light, the code it throws is typically p07**.

You can modify the valve body and i bet Transgo has a kit. But that would require dropping the Vavle body... I like the wiring idea better...
