The heater hose attached to the stat cover is 3/4"....the heater hose attached to the water pump is 5/8". The top rad hose is 1 1/4" and the bottom rad hose is 1 1/2"......(or the other way around). I'm positive on the heater hoses.

okay so at the moment I have the heater hose coming off the thermostat going to the water pump, excluding the heater core entirely.

Did some research, and like you were saying, that spot is optimum. Getting started right now.

Look at the heater core nipples.....1 is larger than the other. We keep a plastic emergency hose adapter in the glove box just in case a heater hose splits or the heater core springs a leak. The adapter is 5/8"X3/4" hose barb which allows for quick/easy heater hose repair, again, just in case.

Gauge read 30 when I turned it on. Let it idle for a few minutes, read 42 degrees. Blah.

I'm using an intellitronix digital water temp gauge. Going to call them today to see what they say.

Does your aftermarket gauge/sending unit require a ground wire?

Hum, bummer. I installed that brand of digital temp gauge several years ago on a Chevy P/U......worked great.

Yeah, thought it might be a celsius unit but the numbers don't match up. Never got a chance to call them.

Okay now the dashboard gauge is reading correct now. I think there was an airpocket back there.
