Prob should have done this long ago but I'm just getting around to replacing my trans fluid and filter on my '96 XJ and was wondering if there was any procedural advice out there on getting this done.
Most people will tell you that since the filter is really more a screen to not waste your time to replace it. Especially if you have no leaks from the tranny pan. Just drain the fluid, about 4 quarts will come out, and refill. Maybe do it a couple times. I say use DEX III. I did it anyway. What I learned when doing it on the ground. Pan will drop no problem. Plenty of clearance. The one issue you will run into, maybe, is separating the dip stick tube from the tranny pan. There is an O-Ring in there that gets all hard and whatnot. I hit it with a little heat which softened it up enough to separate. Otherwise you will not be able to get the pan out from under the Jeep to clean it properly. Least I wasn't able too. Replaced it with one out of an assortment box at the auto parts store that worked.
I went to the effort of replacing the filter one time. then realized it's not worth it since it's really just a metal mesh screen. If you drop the pan, I would definitely look for the heavy rubberized gaskets. Some of the kits have a cork gasket.
What Ralf 77 said. I used the newer Chrysler fluid, but would probably use the DexIII. I think I used the rubber gasket. I dropped the pan on two. One had black goo, so need it. It was low miles at the time 120K. The one that had 205K was clean. As easy as it is to replace the trans fluid, I'd do it every year or every other year. Not dropping the pan though. I'd also think about a trans cooler.

If you can find an AW-4 transmission pan with a drain plug at a parts yard, put it place of your old one while you have it off. Will make next fluid change much less messy.
My pan has a drain plug and my shift setup inside looks like this...
so I'm guessing I have the AW4 transmission. Although I'm not entirely sure.
To come completely clean I have to say I've had this rig for 10 years from 78k miles to 170k miles and haven't managed to change the trans fluid even once. Considering how old the fluid is should I do a system flush like I've seen on youtube? Or just change the fluid out a couple times running a bit between changes?
