ABS with D44 and HP30
I am doing the D44 conversion rear and will be loosing the ABS there. Doing the HP 30 in the front but plan on using the axels out of my 01 LP 30 with tone rings, better Ujoints. I could adapt the HP to have ABS but don't want to bother with the D44. Question is, won't I get the ABS light on if I don't have both front and rear ABS working? If the rear isn't there won't the system lock out the ABS system? So should I even bother with the front only ABS? Is it legal to remove the ABS system from a highway registered vehicle?

I have no idea if this would even work, but could you use the shafts from a GC with a rear D44? Do they have a tone ring on the shaft? Don't know if there is a difference in the shafts from D44a vs regular XJ/TJ D44 shafts. I know the TJ and XJ shafts are interchangable, just need to change the retainer plate.
Just throwing that out there. Maybe someone knows.

The ABS won't work without input from all 4 wheels.
Simply remove the ABS relay from the PDC under the hood and the system will be diabled and your brakes will function normally. You can leave the ABS pump and wires where they are. There are no laws about ABS modifications.

That's exactly what I did when I swapped a D44 rear under my rig. I also pulled all the sensors and cabling to clean things up a bit. Pump is still sitting under the hood though. Pulling the relay should also turn off the ABS idiot light on the dash (it did on my '95 anyway). The brakes will work as if you didn't have ABS, so no worries there. (note: this method does not work for older XJs with the Bendix brake system).

I wouldn't bother with the ABS either. I have the same setup and just pulled the fuse for the ABS. I noticed no difference on the road unless I slam on the brakes, in which case then they'll lock up.
There is a package out there (forget who makes it) that allows you to retain your ABS with a Dana 44 swap, but it is very expensive, and IMHO, not worth it.

OK, off with the ABS it is. One less thing to go wrong. I will be pulling all of it out. The pump looks expensive, should get a few bucks for it.
