98 XJ, "needs oil pressure sensor", and "CEL is on for generic trans code's"

im looking at an XJ this sunday, and the seller says the jeep needs an oil pressure sensor, and that there is a CEL for a Generic trans code.

seller states "mechanic said that the oil pressure sensors are commonly failing on these vehicles, and are easy to replace, its a $25 part"

oil pressure sensor:
1. does anyone have any idea how much the oil pressure sensor will cost?
2. is it common for them to go bad?
3. should i be worried about anything else if this oil psi sensor is broken?

the seller says the trans code is being thrown because the back light for the gear selector is out, he is going to text me the codes tomorrow.

trans code:
1. is this a common thing?
2. is there a list of XJ trans codes somewhere?

I drove 8 XJ's while I was shopping around. Two showed no oil pressure reading. I bought one of them. Picked up a sending unit from Autozone ($25). Still doesn't work. Was easy to replace but it didn't solve the problem so I'm off to do some more trouble shooting. I've read in several posts that it's advisable to pick on up from the dealer.

An oil pressure sending unit will cost a bit more from the dealer but worth every penny in reliability and accuracy with your factory gauge.

Before I would buy an XJ that showed no oil pressure on the gauge, I'd bring along a mechanical oil pressure gauge (they can be rented), screw it in where the sending unit currently resides and verify oil pressure. Then you'll know exactly what the oil pressure is. Don't you really want to know? It very well may be that unit but with being such an easy fix, most of the time the SELLER would replace it themselves. SO verification of the problem seems like a reasonable thing to do and certainly any seller that isn't hiding anything would allow this to be done.

Common codes for a faulty neutral safety switch include both P0700 P0705. And yes, the backup lights are involved in the NSS circuit so not having reverse lights oftentimes coincides with a faulty switch. This switch can oftentimes be disassembled, cleaned, regreased and reinstalled to restore function.

here is the other one he's talking about Neutral & Backup Lamp Switch*4882173 by the Jeep Specialists | Morris 4x4 Center many people attempt to clean them first before buying new, some still like to just replace...that's up to you, if that's even the issue.

ok, so im going to check out this jeep tomorrow, the seller has been really honest, and really helpfull. seems like it could be "the one", just have to check it out visually.

is it bad for the vehicle to drive around with a bad, or dirty NSS?

I'd still check oil pressure if I were considering buying it. Or just swap in a new sending unit; takes all of 10 minutes. Low oil pressure would have a direct affect on the amount I would offer for it. You don't want to have hindsight on this and the seller should not be insulted by your desire to know what the oil pressure is.

It is probably okay to drive around with a faulty NSS, except for you might not have reverse lights and you could have trouble starting it.

I checked it out 20 minutes ago. Everything looks good on it. Fog lights don't work(probably the switch), and the reverse lights don't work(nss).

I noticed that the turn signals blink fast, none of the bulbs are burned out. Is that because of the NSS too?

ended up buying the XJ.

put 180 miles on it today, did a little 4hi action, truck is solid, im happy.
