98 Cherokee Sport- 4wd engaged?

Hi there everyone-
I am looking to buy a used 98 cherokee sport. I have a specific truck in mind, and i had it checked out by a local mechanic who is a friend. The truck was in mostly perfect condition except for one thing. My mechanic friend tried out the 4x4 and it didn't come out (we think). The thing is, on the interior the dash light says it came out- the 2wd is lit up, and it doesn't feel like its in 4wd (no noticible wheel skip on turns), but the front drive shaft is still turning.

I was just wondering if anyone has noticed this on their jeep, and if it is normal or not. I just seems odd to me that the front driveshaft is turning all the time.

And if its not normal, how to fix and what will it cost me?

Thanks~

Normal for an XJ. There are no disconnect hubs, so the front drive shaft turns with the differential. Your ZJ should do the same thing.
