98 Cherokee Problems

I am buying a 98 XJ for $800. The transfercase grinds in 2 HI and 4 HI but is fine in 4 LOW. What could be the cause of this?
ABS light stays on. What could cause this?
and also, is it true that all ABS XJs have the D35? None have the 8.25?

It has a 3 inch RC lift, 31 inch tires, good interior, nice looking exterior.

What do y'all think? Worth $800?

ABS: When you turn the key from off to on (not start), a low voltage signal is sent to all four ABS sensors to check for continuity. If it sees continuity in all four sensors the light will go off. If, after driving it comes back on there may be one or more bad speed senors and/or other problems. I believe the most common issue is bad sensors. The fix can be as simple as resetting the air gap between the tone ring (with a brass feeler gauge) and the sensors, (I believe that the fronts aren't adjustable but the rears are), cleaning the sensor face with brake cleaner (especially if it is contaminated with semi-metallic brake dust) or replacing the sensor. You can bring it to a dealer (bring Vaseline) and have them pull up the stored ABS code then do the repair yourself or troubleshoot it yourself. If you buy it (I would in a heartbeat) and want to try to fix it yourself, repost and I'll go into greater detail on how I fixed mine.

Transfer Case: You should probably go into a little more detail as to when the grinding occurs. It could be that you're not following the correct procedure or it may be as simple as adjusting the shift lever and/or replacing all of the bushings.

All ABS equipped XJs came with the Dana 35 from the factory.

x2 on the T-case issue being related to the shift linkage or the bushings.

Even if its internal, you can find a junkyard T-case for 100-150 bucks.

I think until I track down the ABS problem, would it be alright to just pull the fuse?

And im not sure. I havent driven it yet. Im just going off what the owner said.

Dang it. Atleast my friend has a spare Undercover Fab D35 diff cover he'll give me.

And that would be great if it was just the linkage.

I can get a T-Case for 30 bucks from a junkyard.

So since it could just be the linkage or bushings, is 800 a good deal? 98 XJ 4.0 AW4 NP231 HPD30 D35 3 inch lift and 31 inch tires.

It looks to be in decent condition from the pics. It is a used vehicle, so you always take some sort of risk on buying one. For $800 that risk is relatively small.

I repeat.
Buy it. NOW.
