'97 XJ cranks for a long time.....

...and then starts and runs just fine.

I've searched and read lots of threads, but it seems that the specific year and details are important here, so any suggestions would be great.

It's a 4.0. When it's cold, it cranks for a LONG time (probably twice what I would expect) and then starts just fine. If I turn the key for a few seconds first (to "prime" it), it's better, but still kind of long cranking. When it's hot, it's also better, sometimes starting right away.

I already did a basic tune-up (plugs, wires, etc.), because it needed that anyway. No difference in this problem though.

Ideas?

1997-2001 XJ's have a problem with the fuel line check valve that holds fuel pressure when the motor is off. It likes to fail and the fuel pressure drops to zero slowly at first, and then quickly. You can turn the igintion on and off a few times to prime the system. You can do this forever if you are cheap. There are 2 solutions, install a check valve in the fuel line or replace the fuel pump/check valve assembly located in the gas tank.

I just went through this on my 97 before the holidays and it turned out to be the fuel pump.
