96 having trouble starting sometimes

it seems weird to me but some times my cherokee just doesnt like to start. i will turn the key and it just cranks and nothing will happen. to make it start i have to either put the gas to the floor or pump the throttle vigorusly. then it will start all rough and some times stay on and other i have to keep pumping to keep it running untill it idles well or it will just die out. i thought it may have been the TPS so i relpaced that awhile ago and it seemed to wok well after that but now the problem is returning. i was thinking maybe the crank sensor?

Did you check your fuel rail pressure?

sounds like a fuel issue of some type. From what i hear, crank sensors are a common replacement in jeeps so it may be time to do so.

long crank times are result of fuel or spark issues.

since the spark and coil on the xj's , including my 96', is pretty good, i'd say fuel pressure/flow issues.

on a 96, change the fuel filter. it's very easy, $10 part. it will restore proper fuel volume to the injectors. i'd also add a bottle of techron to the next tank of gas to unclog injectors. you need proper fuel pressure and volume of flow for an injector to run properly. i think your filter is pretty plugged.

at the off chance that the above didn't fix it, then your pressure check valve in the fuel pump is worn out. this site has a few part numbers to replace one yourself in the fuel line. try the filter change and techron first. if the fuel filter has never been changed....it will feel like you dropped a new engine in!

Time to test fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail. The symptoms you describe are not generally ones of a failing crank position sensor. I suspect a fuel delivery problem.

How many miles on the fuel pump in your Jeep?

Harbor freight has a Fuel pressure gauge set for 15.00. I used it to troubleshoot my recent problem and it worked very well.

If you've never replaced the fuel filter, and it has 102k on it I would replace it first. then if you're still having troubles you can go from there.
