96 cherokee starting issues running errands
if I have to start and stop (turn engine off) more than 3-4 times in a half hour period car won't start unless I let it sit for 15-20 minutes...

What is "won't start"? Won't turn over or won't catch?

It's turning but not catching.

Unclebrixxy 07-22-2013 08:37 PM

It isn't turning over enough to start. Get's close then nothing. Wait 10 minutes or so and it will turn over. Alternator tested fine, battery is good.

A million dollars says it's the crankshaft position sensor.

Check for spark when it won't start. I'm guessing you don't have any. Crank sensors are sensitive to heat when they are old. It's pretty common that it'll start cold, but not restart hot, then start just fine again once it's cooled down.

Yep CPS gets my vote too, its gotta be a thermal failure of something. CPS is the most likely, then the coil and ignition module.

Thx fellas. I had a couple people say cps. Is that easy to replace? Good thing is people aren't afraid to offer a large tattoed man a jump in most parking lots in Delaware. If I don't fix it soon ill have to get a sign that reads "it's cool, it will work again in 15 minutes".

Its not horrible....2 bolts and about a half hour. Just kinda hard to get to up on top of the bell housing.

Found a couple on eBay. Looks like I'll add this to the list along with all of a sudden not having hardly any brake pressure and leaky gas tank

psychoteen101 07-31-2013 10:17 AM

careful what brand you buy, some of the cheaper ones are susceptable to failure. i bought mine from napa when it gave out and havent had an issue with it since. And my cherokee is strictly a trail rig so it sees a lot of elements.

check your wheel cylinders for the lack of brake presssure, one may have failed.

Gas tank is probably leaking on the lower side under or near the tank straps. Both my cherokees rotted out in that general area. I think its because water gets trapped inbetween the plastic skid plate and the tank.

Thanks. It seems to only leak when I fill up past $20

Pull the pump assembly. The o ring is not installed properly.

Had the same problem when I bought mine.

X2 on the o ring. Mine is currently leaking from the same area. Get a new o ring and put a small amount of silicone on it to hold it in place while re installing the pump assembly.

Where is the pump assembly?

psychoteen101 08-05-2013 05:23 PM

The pump assembly is on the tank towards the front of the jeep. Youll see the rubber fuel line and the pin connector for the fuel pump coming out of it. There is a ring that holds the pump assembly in and can be somewhat difficult to remove if youve never done it before. If you go on youtube and search jeep cherokee fuel pump replacement, youll probably find something visual you can look at. Or google it for pictures.
