96 cherokee binding up in 4wd

i have a 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.0. when i have jeep in full time 4 wd it drives great untill i get into a parking lot and turn the wheel to park or on any turn really, it feels like its binding up and there is a grinding sound like brake pads eating into rotors. we only drive it in 2 wd drive now. this is the first 4 wd we have owned so i dont know if this is a obvious problem that is know by jeep owners. i have found some post that say a coupler in the tc is bad and others that say the couple doesn't exist. i am hoping that someone that is a mechanic or knows what the hell they are talking about can shed some light on the issue. if you need more info feel free to ask. thanks for your help
