95 XJ oil out the front and back, knocking sound

Hey guys, lately I've had a lot of problems with my 95 XJ with 173K. About 3 months ago, my jeep has had a knocking sound (to be honest it sounds more like a farting sound) at start up, when I turn it off, and when idling. When I get above 15 mph it goes away. I didn't notice any loss of power or gas mileage. More recently I noticed that it was blowing oily smoke out of the tail pipe.

Yesterday, I was out on the interstate for about 30 miles and when I got out of the car, there was oil coming out from underneath the hood, and the back windshield/tailgate was covered in greasy film. I looked under the hood and everything was covered in oil. I took it around the block a few times and it still drives, but there is some noticeable hesitation and loss of power.

Here's what I know-there has been no over heating of the engine, fluid in the radiator and reservoir look normal. I have had a leak in the rear main seal for a while now, but I have kept an eye on the oil level and get my oil changed every 3000 miles. I just moved to Chicago, and don't have a mechanic up here so I am not sure where to take it. I am not looking to fix it or keep it, but want to know what's going on with it. Any thoughts on what is causing the knocking and the oil everywhere??
