Hi, both front wheel started squeaking turning left or right that is in tune with wheels rotating the faster wheels turn the faster the squeak that then falls silent over 30 mph, also front tyres scrub road on full lock turning both right or left, anyone know what this may be? Cheers

I would inspect the front axle u-joints and unit hub bearings.

Thanks, what grease do I use and how do I apply it, or are you thinking the units may need replacement?

Your initial inspection will show you if the u-joints are greaseable or sealed, but if they are squeaking, they probably need replacing. The unit hub bearings are sealed, if worn they are replaced. You should consider replacing both u-joints and hubs to prevent the same disassembly two times.

Thanks, there also appears to be a shock absorbing item relating to steering as in line and leaking oil.

That is a steering dampner/steering stabilizer. If leaking, replace...about $30.

The front axle u-joint on drivers side lhd 89 is movable by hand, when I rotate the front prop shaft by hand 1/2" the driver side front axle moves up and down as it rotates, does this indicate both hub bearing and axle u-joint require replacement, lesser point the grey plastic dust/dirt cover for the axle is also missing not sure what that part is called but also needs replacing.

Should I just focus on the one front axle u-joint that has failed that I can see, or do axle all u-joints and hub bearings, do fail at around the same time then?

The nearest workshop is 25 to 30 miles away I don't own a press, is it ok to drive there with the axle flopping movement, u-joint needle bearings all gone mostly orange powder, or should I put the jeep on a low loader truck to move it? Still drives just squeaks a lot so long as I don't hit a pothole in road?

Also I noticed when steering is on full lock, there is a sound in a burst of what sounds like gas being expelled?
