I just bought my first jeep one week ago. It is a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0 but its a V6. The guy I bought it from seemed shady but I was in such a hurry to get on the road and get to work the next day that I disregarded my instincts. We discussed the engine, motor, radiator, and many other issues. I had a buddy with me at the time who is a previous Jeep owner and he was asking most of the questions. I don't know much about cars so I just listened mostly. The test drive went well and i didnt notice any issues.
I ended up buying it and took it home. Later I had to pick my daughter up and it needed gas so i went and put $20 in. On the way home i noticed some steam coming from the water reservoir and noted the sight but figured Id deal with it in the morning. Deal with it I would ...
The next day it overheated on the freeway and died. When i got it towed home i tried filling the reservoir again and the water came right out of the water pump. When I tried taking the radiator cap off it was stuck!! Finally after fighting with the cap for 30 min it popped off. Low and behold ... The radiator has been sealed shut with silicone!! Literally sealed shut! When I discovered this I recalled the seller saying he put water/laundry detergent in the radiator as a coolant substitute. And he removed the thermostat. WTF!!
I went and got a new water pump, thermostat, lower radiator hose, new radiator, and new spark plugs. After installing everything BUT the new radiator, it still wont start. It turns over, but wont start. My buddy thinks all we need is gas. I'm skeptical. There is about 5 gal in the fuel tank now. shouldn't that be enough? My next move is to replace radiator. Then what? I've been out of work for a week and i'm starting to get discouraged. Anyone got any tips?
