'88 Jeep Cherokee same transfer case as a '96 Grand Cherokee?

I'm about to scrap my XJ and a friend of mine has a Grand Cherokee with a bad transfer case. Are they the same? Mine is a 1988 and his is a 1996.

(I know I could probably figure it out here on the forums but we're driving down the road and I'm on the internet on my 900 year old cell phone and wanna know asap)

assuming the ZJ has a 231. would the input gears swap if it had a 249? by the sound of it he is not looking to break the cases open anyway and is looking for a direct swap.

I've only swapped 242 to 242. Sorry. I think it will work, and some more research should tell for sure.

Honestly, these transfer cases are stupid easy to rebuild. GOOD SNAP RING PLIERS are essential though. The harbor freight ones I used hardly got the job done.

i have a np249 out of a 94 zj. came from a yard in redding, ca. i think it has about 50-60k mi. on it, really easy to turn by hand & would be a direct swap for your buddy (assuming he has the 249). i bought it for a friend's project that went another direction. i think i paid ~$250, but can't find the paperwork. it's pretty heavy,so shipping may be an issue, but if u pay for shipping, i'd let it go cheap. make me an offer!
