7" wheels with 30's or 8" wheels with 31's
This is a great forum! For information about Jeep XJ's you ROCK!
I'm looking for some input and opinions here if you don't mind.
What combination will fit better? 7" wheels with 30's or 8" wheels with 31's on a 91 Cherokee with a 3" lift? The wheels I want are the American Racing black
D-spoke wheels. I don't want to do any fender cutting either.
If anyone has any pictures of their Cherokee's with either of these combinations I would love to see them.
Thank you!
Dennis

I dont have any experience with those wheels, but I do that a 31 will fit on either a 7" or 8" wide rim, I have 31s on my stock ecos with 5.25" of back spacing on 3" of lift no trimming, its a 99, but it should give you a reference. MY opinion would be go with the 8" wide rim on 31s, and then if you decide you want to go bigger in the future you dont have to buy new wheels. just my 2cents

I run a 10.5 in wide tire on a 7 inch wide rims on my wheeling jeep so I can air down farther and still keep the bead(I run a 34/10.5/15 SS LTB).
I did run a 30/9.5, 32/11.5, and a 33/12.5 all on 8 inch wide rims. they worked ok def should of done a 7 inch wide rim with a 30/9.5 tire if you want to wheel(airing down issue). Im actually going to do that with my dd is run stock echos and 30/9.5 bfg at.

Thank you guy's!
Seeing pictures really helps me. Still not sure but I think I will go with 31's, now, I just have to decide between 7" or 8" wide wheels. With less back spacing I know I will end up with a wider trac (like rusted XJ) which is what I want, but I don't want the tires hanging way out the sides so maybe 8" wide is too wide, just not sure?
Anyone else have any pictures of their rigs (with 3" lift) to share?
Thanks again!!!

What EXACT tire size are you looking at?
A 31x12.50 will be a lot better on a 8" wide rim.
A 31x12.50 will be work on either a 7" or 8" rim.

The WIDTH of a tire dictates the rim width, not the height. Maybe you need to read up a little on wheel vs tire sizes?
Is that all you have to contribute to the thread, or do you actually have something constructive to add as well?

With a 10.50 tire, you can go either way mate.
If you EVER think you may go to a 12.50 tire, get the 8" rim. If you are confident that a 10.5 is all you will ever run, your call. Either one will work fine for the street, although a 7" wide rim will grab the tire bead a little better when aired down.

I found that if I run 30 inch tires on the factory steel rims with a 3in lift my spedo stays within spec. If you go with a larger tire don't you need to change gears or even go with a better beefier axle?

Thanks for the photos 97desertrunner!
Thanks Martin!
I don't think I will be lifting it any higher than 3" and I would like a little wider trac width and probably won't be doing any hard core off roading so I think I might go for the 8" wide wheels with the 31-10.50 X 15's.
I wouldn't mind seeing some more lifted XJ pictures if you feel like posting them.
Thanks again everyone!

If you air down the tires to take the jeep offroad w/ a 31x10.50 on an 8" wheel you'll get crud under the beads and develop bead leaks. You'll get significantly better bead retention w/ a 7" wheel w/ a 10.50 wide tire.
