is the 4x4 engaging?

My 86 xj will go into 4lo like I can feel the low gearing...but I don't think the front wheels are actually pulling along. I didn't see them spin either. Any ideas?

I can definitely feel (in the steering wheel) when I am in 4HI or 4LO. Just my 2 cents on that. Does it feel, I guess "stiffer" turning when in 4x4? flex the suspension, get one front tire off the ground and see if it spins. or jack the whole Jeep up a little off the ground and put it in gear, see if the fronts spin (be careful when doing this, think safety above all). just a couple thoughts.

crawl under the Jeep and make sure you are in 4-lo. Check your linkage. try and flex it out until one of your front tires is spinning and the other isn't.

I'll bet you've got a vacuum issue with your front axle. Here's a 20 minute cure for that.
