4:1 Transfer Case?
In my previous life of manual trans TJ's, many people would install a 4:1 transfer case to get slow crawl speed. Now that I have an automatic trans XJ, if I want to crawl slower, I can just use the brake. Does anyone install low-range t-cases in automatic XJ's?
If I'm going to install an SYE, is a low-range t-case another option because it would already have a short-shaft build-in?

To be perfectly honest, the cost of the 4to1 kits for the NP231 is about the same or more than locating a NP241 from a rubi or going with a entry level Atlas for a couple bucks more (okay more than a couple
)

$2000+ for Atlas X.0 4:1 or lower just more money
Rubi NP241 ebay to ur door for $1200, another $400+ for a driveline and sye kit Rubi runs different U-Joints so you are going to need to get the 1310 flanges for it and covert that too ANOTHER $50+ Or NP231, 4:1 tera kit $1000, another $400+ SYE kit and dl Atlas is the only thing I would waste my time with if I was going to go lower gearing in the case and yes it would cost a lot but worth it in the long run OR duel 231 cases |

I think most people just regear since 4:1 isn't an option
The Toyota guys rag me about the high cost for a jeep. They say the 4:1 for a toy is about 400 bucks and then tell me "It's a Jeep Thing" ![]() |

DUH!!! Gearing down a Jeep is totally lame when it comes to cost. You can get way lower then 4:1 with a Toy duel case too but really it costs money to build any rig, some parts on Toys will cost more then Jeeps and/....the argue will never end |

If you keep an eye out, the NP241 rock trac rubi cases can go for as low as $900 shipped. They sell the yokes to convert it, and I beleive that's about it.
Personally I would also rather have the Atlas, but JB converstions also sells a built NP231 with 4to1 and a SYE. Haven't checked for price in awhile though.

Chains in the 241 or 231 suck too, and when they are 4:1 they will stretch much faster. And it is more possible for them to break. Someone on Naxja had a 231 4:1 case and didnt replace his chain or something and blew it up(litterly blew up, the case was in pieces and you could see through it), have to find it and post it for readings. Nothing I have experienced, just heard of. I am replacing my 242 chain this weekend and will be installing my SYE... I will let you know how bad it is after 200k miles of abuse and running 35s with 3.55 gearing for way to long |

Don't forget about the speed sensor difference between the 231 vs the 241 Rubi case....
