4.0 Oil Pan Removal

Hi All,

I have a '99 Cherokee Sport with the 4.0. I have been trying to remove the oil pan so that I can replace the rear main seal. I have run into a problem trying to get the two rear most bolts off of the pan. I have been working on them for a while and it doesn't look like it is even possible to get a socket around them. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get to these? Are they a weird size?

There is an additional u shaped bracket at the back of the pan the "saddles" the pan below the RMS. It is the "oil pan support bracket". I had to chip away the rubber to access the bolt heads. Here is a little post I made on it when I changed mine:

Thanks for the info! What is the function of the bracket? Is it really necessary to replace it if I damage it?

I believe they are a different size bolt. Maybe metric, but not torx.

FYI, not to beat a dead horse, but you can push a 13mm socket against the "saddle" and force it on to the bolt. It's rubbery and will move out of your way enough to get the socket on the bolt head. The two rear are larger bolts than most of the oil pan bolts, which are 11mm if I recall correctly...
