$350 96 XJ Cherokee
Here is a 1996 Cherokee I picked up last week for $350.
![]() It needs a tranny (AX-15) which I can get here in local yards. Been doing a little research on this site for a budget lift. It looks like I can get 4.5" out of ZJ V8 coils and Dakota leaf springs. Anyone used this setup? It wont be a daily driver by any means but will be licensed for the street. I would like to get most of the parts from local bone yard to build it if possible. It will also need a bit of work on the floor in way of patching and such. I am an accomplished welder and fabricator so any ideas on this project would be welcomed. Thanks, LM ![]()

ZJ V8 coils give you 1" at 4.5" you will also need lower control arms, longer break lines and at the very least a t-case drop kit. You will also need an adjustable track bar. You want budget go with 2" coil spacers 2" shackles and 31" tires. Lift should run about $100

youll be find with the stock brake lines at 4.5 inches. you have to straighten the hardline though, and remount it. its really simple, just drill a hole, and use a self tapping bolt and your done.

Thanks for the input. I want to get it as high as I can for as cheap as I can. What are better, the Dakota rear leafs of the S-10 rear leafs? I am also hearing that the coils out of a mid 80's cougar give more lift than the ZJ v8 coils.
Maybe I'll just buy new coils for the front and use teh S-10/Dak springs in the rear, then it looks like I can use stock shocks from a late model Wrangler or Rubicon as well..... LM |

Gotta love the cheap Jeeps. Just picked up a '95 in really nice shape (except for rusty rockers, of course) for $400.00. It looks exactly like yours, as a matter of fact, but with factory tint.
It has GC coils, an S10 bastard pack and ProCrap shocks in it, but the PO said it rode REALLY rough so I plan to make some mods. It'll be the 15 y/o daughter's DD so I only want an inch or two lift at most with a decent ride.

You can use F150 coils, they are good for atleast 4", but they are stiff.
