3.07 Gear/ 4.10 Regear Question
Just a quick Q here that I was hoping someone could shine a little light on...
I have a 98 xj with unfortunately the 3.07 gears I'm in the process of saving up to get the re 4.5 and 32" Procomp M/T's. which my 3.07's will def not push. So my question is this... Will my axel handle a regearing or do I need to swap? I searched alot and found a good deal of info about axels and regearing, but not really from someone who has the 3.07 gears in a xj like mine. BTY i'm going to settle on the 4.10's if I do regear cause the 4.56's seem a little to low for sustained Freeway driving.

Your rig should be fine with the re-gear AS LONG as your not gonna do any SEVER off roading (rock krawling, mud drag racing, ect...). They make an upgrade kit called the Super 35 kit. Comes with new axel's, bearing's and a locker of some kind. Might be worth looking into. Let us know what you decide. Get us some pics!!! Good Luck!!

I have an 03 TJ that had 3.07 gears. I installed the RE 4.5 lift and 33" BFG M/T's. I "HAD" to regear to something higher because I had to be going down hill to use 5th gear. So I went with 4.10 and it put me back to normal. Don't forget to get a new speedo gear as well or else your speedometer will be WAY off. I have been off road several times since then and already snapped one rear passenger side axle shaft so after numerous failed attempts at finding an affordable Dana 44 I have ordered the Super 35 with ARB locker.

You will be fine with the 32's, and 4:10 gears in your axles. But having said that I would search the junkyards for a chrysler 8.25 out of a 97-up 4 cyl. you can find them with the 4:10's from the factory pretty easy. And will be cheaper than regearing the 35. Then just regear the front to match.

I wouldn't bother putting gears into a Dana 35 unless you are sure you'll never get bigger tires or a locker.

If you never plan on lockers or bigger tires, the D35 will be ok. If yo plan of much 4x4ing that I would look in to a 97+ cry8.25 out of another xj. its stronger, almost = to d44. and bolt on. 32s are just at the limit of the d35.
you front will be fine

Better off getting an 8.25, D44 or 8.8 than a super 35.

Does the D44 swap out as easy as the 8.25 on my D35

If you find one out of an XJ, yeah, it'll bolt in just the same as an 8.25". You'll have an easier time finding an 8.25" though because the D44 was only used from 1987-1989 along side the D35.

I'd drive it with the gears you have and the 32s and just save the money for the future if you end up wanting to regear or get a bigger/better axle. That's my plan at least, I have 3.07s and 33s, gone about 13,000 miles with it so far.

Yep, just what I did to go from 3.55's to 4.10's. Just a word of warning though, I bought a complete donor vehicle mainly for the 4.10 axles (a 29 spline 8.25 and D30 front) but after I had done the work to swap them both in I discovered someone in the past had fitted a 3.55 to the front of the donor. I was not a happy chap!!!! If you source axles from the junkyard don't believe the axle tags, physically check the ratios and learn from my misfortune, there are some funny motors out there and they usually get worse just before heading to the breakers.

Jason, the reason I suggested that he regear the front, is for some reason the 8.25's out of jeeps around here go for 150 to 250, but the dana 30 out of the same jeep usually runs 600 to 900 dollars. But they are both easy to find here with the 4:10 gears.

No luck at the yard but,.... Stopped by the local 4x shop and was givin some options from them. They said that regearing the D35 would be fine and that the chry 8.25 was not to much stronger. I was quoted 722 in parts and 776 for labor for both axles with 4.10's. they also recommended putting tru trac on at least the back which would be another 420 on top. Or I could regear the front and use the super 35 with tru trac (for 1k) or with a locker (for 1169). I'm figuring I might as well just do the super 35 in back since it's around the same price as the D35 regear with tru trac and it will be stronger. Any suggestions??
