2001 Cherokee Sport

We are looking at a 2001 cherokee sport for a winter truck for my mom. We were wondering how we can make sure 4 wheel drive works. And he also wants to know how to know that it is engaged, is there a light that comes on on the dash or anything. I only know about the 249 transfer case in my zj being 4wd all time. thanks a bunch

If it is for your mom, then you should look for a Cherokee with NP242 transfer case - TC lever shoud have 4Hi FullTime position. And yes - light comes on on the dash with info that 4WD is engaged.

4.0 / NP231 / TrueTrac rear / BRC liquid gas equipment / Lift 3" / SkyJacker Nitro 8000 / Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 31x10.5 R15 / 13000 lbs behind original bumper :)

It had 2 hi, 4 all time, neutral, and of course, four low. Thanks for the info about the light, I don't think I saw it come on.

Should have 2Hi-4PartTime-4FullTime-N-4Low

4FullTime - green light comes on
4PartTime and 4Lo - orange light comes on

4.0 / NP231 / TrueTrac rear / BRC liquid gas equipment / Lift 3" / SkyJacker Nitro 8000 / Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 31x10.5 R15 / 13000 lbs behind original bumper :)

The light should come on but in the event of a light malfunction, you'll know if you're in 4WD by the sound of the drivetrain. More of a rumble with it when engaged.

With the 242 transfer case, you can use fulltime 4WD in any road conditions, even dry pavement. Part time should be only on roads that provide some slippage.

Be sure to verify that this vehicle works in all 4WD positions, as well as ensuring that everything else works, before making an offer.

the dash lights sometimes don't work. it could either be a bad bulb in the dash or a bad switch on the transfer case. the light only indicates what position the transfer case lever is in, and has nothing to do with whether or not 4wd is engaged. either case, the bulb or the switch, it's not a bid deal to fix.
