2000 XJ OHC help
I've also come to the thought of an OHC for my 2000XJ. Though this post is different from those of wiring, what works and what doesn't work. I want an OHC mainly to store things like switches and buttons that will control aux. items like offroad lights, future electronic lockers, you know, misc stuff like that and maybe even a CD deck if some how possible. I've thought about making one from fiberglass and then stumbled on the fact that there is already a console made for the XJ it just comes down to "modding" it. I would be completely contempt with the compass and temp features working and infact that's all I would care about. Is it possible to add a "drop down box" or two to this console? I don't know the specs on it far as how big they are. I want something like the tuffy TJ OHC box but I don't think that would work in an XJ and I would like a compass and temp feature just because.
I also lost a post I made earlier, not sure where it is hiding but it was regaurding stock amps in an XJ? Is there one or does the amp in a cd deck power the speakers? thanks!

The stock OHC in the XJ is made of plastic and will hold up to some switches and wires but I really doubt that it can support a radio or CD player unless you are talking about a small portable unit. You may be able to re-reinforce the stock OHC but it only hangs down about 1.5 inches and there is little open space inside it. There are 2 little pockets for some sunglasses and a garage door remote. The console is about 38" long and 8" wide. The OHC is hard to find in the junkyards and you would do better to sell it if you did find one and use the money for something that would do what you need.
The amp on my factory premium sound system is under the rear seat on the drivers side. ![]()

I take it the tuffy wrangler OHC with drop boxes wont work? lol
My friend is handy with fiberglass and what not. I think we are going to look into making our own. There is no real XJ overhead consoles that are aftermarket or anything and I don't think the factory one is what I want exactly so I think it's time to make a hybrid more or less. |

even though i have and recomend the stock console, i picked mine up at a salvage yard for cheap and it is great, i saw something at walmart the other day that seemed 'ok'. they were near all the cheesy accessories but had a clock/compass, sunglass storage and other storage container kit type thing for overhead...worth checking out.

I'm just going to make one. Maybe buy a console and hack it apart for the electronic part or maybe I can find one that can be installed that wont have to be connected to the computer. It will be more custom based, I want to relocate my CD deck up to the overhead possion and I'm going to put all my switches up there. I'm more worried about wires and the actual making of it then I am about the fiberglass. That's easy, however, when it's all said and done I'm sure I'll show pictures of it, maybe see if anyone is interested in the same thing as a better alternative to an overhead console. And since it's fiberglass and hand made it can be pretty much customized to anyones need or wants.
