2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4.0, 4wheel

Jeeps runs fine, and then, say I stop to get gas, go pay, and go to start the car and it won't start. All gadgets still work - radio, wipers, etc., but car is dead when trying to start. This has been going on for almost a year, and sometimes it is worse than others. Didn't happen for two weeks and has happened twice in the past 3 days. It will start after about 10-15 minutes during which time I am turning the ignition, moving the gear shift - automatic -. Someone said Neutral Safety Switch and I saw an earlier post, but it won't start in neutral either. Starter has been replaced as well as battery cables. Help!

When you say "wont start" I assume it won't even crank. If that's the case, it might still be the NSS. I believe it's contacts need to be closed in either Park or Neutral to allow power to the starter solenoid. If the solenoid doesn't energize, the starter won't work. Carry a volt meter so you can do some diagnostics next time.

You can unplug it and jump the contacts for the start circuit.

I would not advise this as a permanent fix, but it would either confirm or eliminate it as a problem.

Driving with the switch unplugged your tranny may act funny and you wont have reverse lights.
