My wife's jeep started making noises in the front end when ever she turned left or right real sharp, I checked all the u joints and made sure nothing was loose. We then took it to a 4 wheel drive shop and he checked both differentials and transfer case, he said he could find no problem and just charged us for the fluids he had to use. We brought the jeep home and I crawled under and took out the drive shaft going to the front diff. and the noise in the front stopped. I Took it to a parking lot and drove in an aray of circles and no more sound or vibrating in the front end. Now the kicker, the transfer case makes a grinding and popping sound occasionally when driving down the street. It will pop and sound awful for a few sec. and then pop again and sound like nothing is wrong. During the time of all this happening the speedometer started slowing down and now it dosen't work at all. It happens mostly if you hit a dip in the rd or excellarate hard. It sounds like it is trying to shift into 4 wheel drive on its on. I can put it in 4 high and it sounds like a bearing or something has worn out and it will jump back to 2 high. I was told some transfer cases are timed like an engine and was wondering if this thing has jumped time. What would be envolved in disengaging the transfer case from the transmission and just using this as a 2 wheel dr because this vehicle never leaves the rd anyway? It Haunted:help:
Check the transfer selector linkage. It may be moving around because of a bad or loose transmission mount. You can select 2WD and remove the link between the lever on the transfer case and the selector. It just pries off. It is located right between the front driveshaft and the transfer case.
You need to adjust the linkage to the transfer case. It sounds like the linkage is not quite right and that could be the binding or grinding issue in 4hi.
The transfer case is gear driven and the gears in it mesh together when put in 4wd. The 4hi and 4full time (if you have a NP242) are meant to be engaged on the fly (while driving).
When dissengaged the front DS just turns and is not engaged.
I removed the linkage today and it is still doing the same thing. Checked the shift linkage on the tc and it is tight. I also pulled out the speedometer gear and it is worn smooth (no wonder the speedometer is not working :doh: ).
Thanks for the offer, but I found a place online that had the speedometer gears for 9 dollars and ordered me one from him. Thanks to this forum I have figured out everything else that was wrong with this jeep except the TC. I have the parts ordered for the air, the speedometer, and found and cleaned the IAC valve. Now for the big problem.
Don't know if this'll help, but here is the experience I encountered with my '01 XJ. For months I had been hearing/feeling a clumping noise as I accelerated from a stop, not always but in certain situations. I also noticed that when placed into 4x4 hi, I would get a grinding type noise when accelerating. I messed with the linkage, greased everything including the rear drive shaft, and tested removing the front DS. Removing the from DS seemed to have the same affect as when you took yours off.
When I was at my wits end, I decided I'd just wait and see what would finally give out. Well, that day came when differential fluid started getting flung all over the underside of my XJ. The rear output shaft seal had given out. Upon inspection I noticed it was pretty torn up. When I finally got the seal removed I had noticed that the rear snap ring had sheared off and was floating around in the rear cone causing the shaft to jam and tearing the seal to shreds.
In hindsight when I greased the output shaft I had noticed that here was inward/outward play in the shaft that I now know is not normal. Upon replacing the snap ring and the seal, my XJ rides great now and I can confidently use my 4WD again.
Again, this may be a long shot for the cause of your problem but it may be worth checking if you have any play in the rear output shaft. Something must've caused the teeth on your speedo gear to grind down. I don't think this is common, is it?
I finally got a chance to work on this thing some. Today I took the rear drive shaft out. I had to cut the factory clamp on the front of the boot to remove the drive shaft. Then I took the the metal dust cover off, which I destroyed getting it off, so now I will have to go to the dealership to get a new one. I checked for play in the shaft and it had less than a 1/4 of an inch of play(is this good?). Then I took the cone section off and a small plate that it holds in place and every thing looks fine but you can move the shaft all over the place and slide it in and out about an inch or more, until the chain hits on the rear of the transfer housing(is this normal?) Looking inside the transfer every thing loks fine to me. But I need to know what should I look for?
Well I got the dust cover ordered today. I guess I will just putt this thing back together and drive it till it falls apart, may then we'll figure out what it is.
Thanks JRN1023, finanlly got around to pulling the tc down and thats exactly what the problem was, the c clip, replaed it and it is doing fine now. Once again Thanks!
