2 problems with my xj - AC and electric

Problem 1 - Have a '97 and the AC blows really cold but rafter driving for a while the air will randomly switch to the defrost vent or other places (without touching the switch). Occasionally it will just stop blowing much air altogether.

Problem 2 - driving at night I noticed the lights inside and out started to pulse like they had a heartbeat. Bad alternator?

#1 you have a vacuum leak in your HVAC system.

With no vacuum to move the blend doors the xj's system will go to defrost.

#2 The lights pulsing could be as simple as a grounding issue on the motor.

Check the alternator bolts and make sure they are tight. If so make sure your grounding strap from the firewall to the back of the head is there and tight.

Best and easiest way is to use a smoke machine to pump smoke into the lines. Where the smoke comes out there is a leak.

Other than that searching all the lines looking for it.

Make sure you check the vacuum ball on the front bumper. They are known to crack.
