2.8L chevy Swap

If what i read is true.. The Chevy 2.8L V6 shares the same transmission as the 2.5L 4 cylinder jeep engine? Would it be possible to swap in the 2.8 engine into my Jeep? Is it worth it?

Im not sure, but if it is possible, why not put a 3.4 out of a camaro into your jeep? The 2.8 and the 3.4 are the same block.

I,m not sure about having the same transmission bolt pattern but I have a 86 in the back yard with a factory 2.8 and had a 5-speed and it now has the auto tranny and t-case out of a blazer but due to differences in the t-case the front drive line was not hooked up. I think a 4.2 inline jeep motor might work better for your swap It is still carbed so no computer to deal with. If you are really wanting a 2.8-3.4 v6 you could get swap parts from the junk yard out of a factory equipped 2.8 Cherokee.

Do the 3.4L swap. It's pritty straight forward. We had it swapped in and running in less than a day in my MJ.

the 2.8 and 2.5 GM iron duke 4 cyl share the same trans bolt pattern
as for the jeep 2.5 I highly doubt it shares the same pattern but anything is possible
and I have to agree if you find out this is a bolt in swap for you I wouldnt use the 2.8 its just not a great swap candidate
even the fuel injected versions only had 125 hp and 150 lb/ft
if ur just lookin for more hp I would just build the 4 cyl up
but if your lookin to swap in a V6 for the trouble involved I would step up to a larger displacement version of the 60* GM V6
the 3.1 out of a 89-92 camaro/firbird would probably be a cheaper option than the 3.4 and more plentiful in the junkyards too
the 3.1 is rated at around 140-150hp and I think TQ is somewhere around 190-200 or so

if you want the 3.4 the only vehicles to look for is a 93-95-1/2 V6 camaro
they are rated at 160 HP and torque is above 200 lb/ft but I am unsure of the exact #'s

good luck in your search and let us know if you find out whether the jeep motor uses the GM bell housing bolt pattern

I don't think swapping in a 2.8L V6 would be worth the time, effort or expense. I have an '86 Comanche with a 2.8L V6. In my opinion, it's among the worst engines ever made in the USA. If I didn't know better, I'd swear it was a Communist product. If properly tuned, they'll move your Jeep along, but nothing more.

I don't have any experience with the 3.4, but it's gotta be better than the 2.8.

yeah...any of the 3.x engines will fit.

3.1, 3.4, 3.5, 3.8, 3.8 sc, 3.8 turbo GN cars and turbo TA cars...and turbo vette).

be sure to grab the ECM/wire harness for whatever engine you get. and grab the accessories and if you want the tranny (out of any of the RWD units any way). you may need a transfer case adapter with the tranny but it's more stout than what you have and parts are easier to find and cheaper.

i'm thinking about doing a 3.4 or 3.8sc swap into mine. i have a 4l60 and a 700r4 sitting here and dont know what to do with either of them...so i may as well buy a engine to put in the jeep.

Isn't the 86 2.5L EFI anyway? Swapping in a 2.8L carb'd engine would be a step backwards. The little 4cyc has more power and would be more reliable.

But as mentioned, the 3.4L chebbie would be the better swap.

the 2.5 isent fuel injected until early 90's i believe. Mine has throttle body injection which really isent too great.. well i guess its basically fuel injected but only has one injector.

Im gonna do a compression test on it soon, with 250,000 kms what kinda numbers can i expect? When would it be due for a rebuild ?
