1996 XJ over heating problem.

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0L I6 with A/C. When driving the car runs at about 180-190 range but at a light or long stop it slowly creeps up to redline were i have to shut it off. i have both the mechanical fan and E fan but the E fan only runs with the A/C on which makes it over heat quicker so i don't use it. i think it may need a water pump? does this sound possible?

Have you checked your fan clutch? Also check your radiator cap.

I also had this problem

Either the sensor is no longer good that turns the e fan on or the computer on the jeep isn't turning the fan on anymore. Mine is that the computer no longer activates the e fan. So what I did was run a wire for the fan with an inline fuse and I now manually turn the fan on,which I prefer because I do hit the beach a lot and its nice to be able to control the fan to keep the truck cool. Also I took the mech fan out and put dual e fans in. Which I love. Hope that helps as it should as long as all other components of your cooling system are up to par
