1996 Jeep Cherokee Country, Check engine light on, Sputtering/rumbling.
I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country 6cyl, 4.0, 4x4, 115,000miles. The check engine light is on. It is sputtering/rumbling (sounds like its going to stall out, but then corrects itself, or I can generally correct it by revving it up in neutral) mostly at low speeds, often when stopped at a red light or stop sign, etc... This is accompanied by a general slight loss of power.
Steps I have taken: 1. New Spark plugs 2. New Wires 3. Cleaned out the throttle body and air intake 4. New Air filter 5. New Fuel filter 6. Fuel system cleaner (add in gas tank). 7. On, off, ignition key test. It is difficult to read. I get what appears to be a 33 followed by a 55 (end of codes). According to the following websites, code 33 is “An open or shorted condition detected in the A/C clutch relay circuit.” Again that is if I’m reading the above codes correctly. I should add, I’m not running the A/C, heat, fan, etc. when the problem occurs. Does this code make sense in my situation? If so, how do I go about correcting it? If not, any suggestions? http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/dtc.html http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoECUcodes.htm 8. I checked all auto parts stores in my area, none of them either check codes or have the scanner to loan for my vehicle. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Thanks for your help, CapaJeep

We're had that same prob in one of our delivery trucks.. So far we've replaced the EGR valve, fuel pump/sender, fuel filter.. plugs/wires/cap/rotor, o2 sensors.. just got an ECU in today.. now we are going to try that. Do you have an autozone in your area? they usually scan the cars for you.. if not then your best bet is to hit up the dealer or a garage and pay the 60 bucks.

Thanks for the reply. Prior to writing my post, my local Autozone did not have a scanner, however, they did get one in tonight so I’ll try it out tomorrow. Thanks again.

DirtyWigeon,
I hope your wrong. We'll find out today or tomorrow. I was able to get a scanner. I used the OBD-II Auto Scanner. The code is PO132 - O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage - Bank 1 Sensor 1 (Sensor 1 is located upstream of the catalytic converter). Any tips in replacing it post here or please see: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/replacing-o2-sensor-90981/#post604132 Thanks, CapaJeep |

Well, it was the O2 sensor. It was pretty easy to change and it's running good now. Thanks for the replies.
