1990 Wagoneer Q's
Hey guys,
A relative has a 1990 Jeep Wagoneer with 150,xxx, 4WD runs good etc. He's asking 1400 but might come down a bit...not sure. First of all, anything I should know about these things? Compared to a regular XJ. Also, he says that he thinks the T-Case is gone out, but hes not positive. Said he was driving and started getting really bad driveline vibes so he took out the front driveshaft and that fixed the problem, and he hasnt messed with it since. He told me it was really hard to find a T-Case for these? Are there any other models that will swap into it relatively easily?(not sure what its got in there now) Also, if im not mistaken, this has the older style cooling system, what is involved with the newer system swap? Any other general information, websites or anything is appreciated too! Thanks for any help you can give me.

hello, I have an '87 XJ Wagoneer. The only difference is the front light setup, grill, fake wood grain, power everything and I htink most Wago's came wth the Dana 44 rear axle (the strongest rear axle for jeep). Mine has the AW4 tranny and NP242 xfer case, the xfer cases are not hard to find. THe front driveshaft is most like needing new u-joints, and they are like $15 dollars, not bad. I love my Wagoneer. I paid $400 for mine, so $1400 seems steep kinda. If you have any more questions feel free to pm me, or ask here.

Hey , thanks for the response man.
What kind of shape was yours in when you bought it? I havent seen it in a while but if i remember correctly its in very good shape. Hes an old man and never used the 4wd, and takes care of his vehicles like their his kids. As far as motor and everything esle its all the same as the regular xjs then? Im supposed to go take a look at it this weekend. Its very hard to find any information on these things! That would be awesome if it had the D-44 in it! |

Mine had a bad rear main seal, (about $30 if you do it yourself, including the RMS and oil pan gasket), and leaking timing chain cover. It had around 245k miles IIRC, but everything else worked great. Mine did come stock with the D44, and I removed my rear sway bar once I lifted it. Besides that the only thing that irks me is that the front side maker lights (next to the headlights) are NOT the same as XJ sidemarkers. Ours are a little skinnier and taller, even though every store says they're the same. But yeah, they are the same vehicles besides what I listed above. Some XJ have the NP242 and some have the NP231 xfer case, just look to see if you have full time 4wd, part time 4wd, 2wd and 4low on your xfer case shifter, if you do that is the NP242.
The only thing bad about the NP242 is that there are not as many aftermarket parts as the NP231 but I love the all wheel drive ability of it, so its worth the lesser amount of aftermarket support to me. post some pics of it once you get it! |

Sweet deal! Everything is in working order except the issue with the vibes. Have you found anywhere that does have aftermarket support for these things?
I dont know much about 4wd so ill check it out next weekend when I(hopefully and probably) bring it home. If you have more pics id love to see em! |

I got access to a 99 that needs an engine for $1200. And it may not even need an engine. Just turns over and doesn't start. What I'm sayin is that for that money you can usually turn up cheaper XJ's. Look for a 91 or newer. Unless you really like the looks of a wagoneer. But all your really gettin is an odd ball grill and narrow flares. Maybe some odd wheels and gussied up interior. Just sayin if I wanted a Jeep with Wagoneer on it I would get a FSJ and enjoy the anemic 360

I actually really like the looks of the wagoneer. And its a family vehicle so I know that Im not going to get burned with some sort of problem I dont notice at first. Also, I know that he has taken extremely good care of it, its garage kept and all. I know I could find something a bit newer for around 1200, but around here that price range comes with lots of problems.
I will have 1300 or so extra if i buy this, and would rather spend the money on cosmetic things to make it awesome( lift, tires, recovery etc.) than motor problems. Its the sense of security... Also Im in college and need the motor and tranny etc to be reliable, not something I may have to work on before I can even start driving it. |

Jeep badged the Wagoneer in the early years, 84-90. In 91 they came out with the Briarwood, and the Waggy went away. This was the "top of the line" XJ at the time.
The Wagoneer Limited is a little different, it had "wood" paneled sides and leather seats, an upgrade. I believe all Waggys had 4 headlights, although the early 4cyl diesel version may have had 2. The only one's to consider, IMHO, are the years 87-90, unless you're going to replace the drivetrain. It's probably an auto, which is good, because they all had the AW4. These older ones that are rust free and in good shape are getting harder to find. All in all, a good price for a 90. I would buy it myself in a heartbeat. Good luck.
