1987 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 4.0

I'm working on my hunting truck and it has an unusual problem. Runs fine but every once in a while it will shut down then catch back up and backfire. If it does not catch back up it will not crank until I let it sit for about a minute then it will fire back up. One time it did that it blew the muffler apart so now if it does not catch back up I turn the key off. If I do not turn the key off something has power cause it idles rough, sounds like the rods are knocking then die and smoke comes from the breather. Anyone know what can cause this? I have replaced the power cable that goes to the starter and the one that goes to the switching
box. Still doing it.
