1987 Cherokee Overflow tank

I have to replace my plastic overflow tank and cap atleast 2 times a year to maintain the correct pressure in my cooling system. The plastic starts to expand and the cap starts to leak etc... I have been looking around to see if anyone has made custom tanks that have maybe thicker plastic or a tank made of metal. Somthing to last me longer then 6 months. This is for a 1987 jeep cherokee. Just wondering if anyone else had the same problems and if anyone has any ideas.

Thanx

i have the same problem. im on the third or fourth tank. im just really tempted to convert to the open cooling system of 91+ and ditch the bottle all together.

I converted my '88 to an open system. On the other two, I had a local racing radiator shop make me a couple of overflow tanks out of aluminum and I'm using a 16 lb cap. Paid like $60 each, but at least no more worries. The shop that did it for me said he's done probably a hundred for Cherokee owners. He has a template already made up and could mass produce them I guess.

Thats funny, im only on my 2nd bottle (recent one put on in 97) and mine still works without problem. But i did see somebody that was selling a metal tank for the closed cooling system, and it is solving all of their problems that you are describing. If i find it ill post back.

Hey 88_xj_hunter you wouldnt happen to know the phone number to the race shop that made that overlfow tank for you would you?

Convert it to an open loop setup.

I found a site that has a metal overflow tank for an 88, but it is $288... Thats a bit over priced I know. I was thinking of having a custom motorcycle place make one. Since it is very much like a motocycle gas tank anyway. But if anyone has a site that has the metal tanks, I would love to get the url for it or an e-mail. Thanks.

Convert it to an open system...especially if you have cooling components that are old anyways and could use being replaced. It's ultimately a radiator, heater valve and hoses with some wiring for the e-fan and you're done.

I've got my system priced out at $320 for pretty much brand new everything (excluding coolant cost).

A simple trick to solve this problem easily is to replace the cap with one specified for a Volvo. It grips the threads on the tank better than those cheapy chinese caps ever thoght of doing, even if the tank is a cheapy chinese one. Napa has them for about $10. It's a 703-1396.

my hood was hitting the top of the reservoir and eventually causing a leak. When I installed my second one, I lowered the mounting bracket. Don't know if your situation is the same.

Funny you should mention that. The Volvo cap is also a lower profile and is much less likely to contact the hood when the bottle expands.

Does anyone have a part number for that volvo cap? Or at least know what model volvo cap will fit the jeep? No one in town carries replacement bottles or caps for jeeps but I think I may be able to find one for a volvo if I know which cap I'm looking for.
