136A Alternator Swap into XJ
Hi everyone i recently got a 136 amp alternator out of a 98 ZJ and want to put it into my 1999 XJ. I know i have to grind the mounting bracket to fit the larger bodied alternator. Im confused with the wiring. I know i have to switch the plastic boot so the wires will fit better but what do i do with the actual plug from the original XJ alternator, there is no spot for it and dont know where i would attach those wires from the plug if i cut it off to expose just the wires. What does the plastic plug connector actually control or go to is it a ground or is it the voltage guage in the dash? im lost.
Here is the ZJ alternator What does the 1" two stud connectors on this alternator connect to? Can anyone help me all i can find is info on a swap into a TJ which has the same wire connections...

the stock wires should just slip right into place, no need to cut or splice or anything the factory wires.
http://www.bc4x4.com/tech/2004/jeepalt/ edit: seems 99+ alts use a plug instead of the bolts, will research and let ya know. edit2: apparently an 03 Durango w/ 5.9l Alt is the one you want, it is a direct wiring fit, just clearance the brackets and plug it in. It even offers a 160amp option Last edited by Veeb0rg; 05-20-2009 at 12:11 AM.. |

veeb0rg will this swap work the same on a 95XJ? Id love to put a bigger alt in my rig. You sure the 2 bolts on the back are not mixed up as far as which tab does what? Im not 100% sure what exactly they do maybe you can tell us that to.
edit: i just looked up the alt for the 03 5.9 and its got the 2 pin plug on it not the style needed for an older xj |

right in 99 they switched to the plug, 98 and earlier still used the 2 bolts. The picture in the first post is what 98 and older use, the second picture posted is the 99+ style.
You could just cut the plug off the 99 and use 2 eyelet connectors on the wires, which wire is which I couldn't tell ya though. They both come off the PCM, one is battery voltage *green/orange* the other is less then battery voltage *green* These colors are fairly standard for chrysler, even my 95 intrepid uses those color codes. I added a 136amp alt from a dodge ram 3500 deisel on that. I had to change the plug as the alt had the 99+ style connector and my car didn't, but a quick trip to the junkyard and I had the connector I needed. I got lucky when I changed the plug as the one I had had a white/blue instead of a green/orange, but other then that it worked perfectly. http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc233/A12volt/untitled-1.jpg Last edited by Veeb0rg; 05-20-2009 at 10:53 PM.. |

Swap in a 1990
I have the alt with the plug instead of the 2 bolt (it's out of a 2000 Durango). Does anyone know which of the two connections go to which wires on the 90XJ?
