130k miles, what usually breaks first?
I just bought a 1999 Cherokee Sport with 130k. What are the first things that usually go wrong with these Jeeps? I'm looking to do some preventative maintenance so my daughter can drive it and I don't have to worry about anything breaking. It has the 4.0l engine, runs good with lots of power, good oil pressure, and of course, it goes down the road a little left, a little right. THANKS TO ALL

Dude, its a jeep, you don't have to worry for atleast another 70,000.
![]() Edit: I guess to answer your question seriously, it really depends how its been used and how its been maintained, if it wasn't off road much and maintained well you should be good. Check all the usual, ball joints, tie rod ends, brakes (esp. rubber lines), u-joints, fluids, and tires. P.S. I didn't realize that your new, WELCOME! If you have questions about any of this, feel free to post up or PM me.

well it depends on what maint was done before... any records when you bought it? i know the previous owner before me around that mileage did the water pump, trans computer and o2 sensors. seems like on some 4.0 thats around the mileage of the rear main seal to go.. my xj hasnt had that go yet and its a 160k, but my yj rear main went at 125k.. so it really depends.... but just go through it, check plugs, wire, cap, rotor, ect. change all fluids, see how dirty the trans and t-case fluid is, and you will be good to go. this is my 7th vehicle i have owned, and also the highest mileage vehicle i have owned, and it has been the most reliable. oh one thing i would reccomend, a trans cooler, they are cheap, i got mine for 30 bucks. the auto in these things will last as long as the motor. but just as added inexpensive protection, i would throw a trans cooler on. even if it stays stock. just my opinion.

In, That is all I can think of at 130k is it breaks in.
Might be time for a full tune up. I just today looked at an 88 XJ Wagoner 4.0 auto with 240k that runs perfect. Chris

I've had my jeep a year, I bought it at 130k (1992). the things I've replaced so far have been. Oil, trans fluid, cap & rotor, plugs, wires, 2 injectors, a few injector o-rings air filter, some cracked vacuum lines, fuel filter, drive belt, and upper idler pully. I will be replacing the Alternator this week probably. most all of this has been preventive maintenance. the vehicle runs like a champ, it's still on it's original cat. probably original O2 sensor also... who knows... very good choice of vehicle for your daughter.

I'd be looking at the cooling system first and foremost. If the vehicle has little to no documentation with it, I'd be looking to replace the water pump, clutch on the mechanical fan, and I would check the harmonic balancer and make sure it's not walking back on the bushing.
Otehr things to look at or keep an eye on is the rear main seal and the Oil filter adpater housing at the block. These two things will leak over time. As mentioned, a trans cooler will go a long way tword keeping the trans in good shape. The 4.0L and AW4 is a pretty solid setup, and the only thing that needs to be watched it heat on either.

I've only had mine for 3-4 months now. However just recently I replaced the front swaybar bushings. Otherwise I have 104k and no problems.

I bought my 97 xj 4.0 about 5 years ago with 63k miles on it. I've had two water pumps die on me (around 85k and 130k). It now has 142k miles on it and other than the water pumps, no problems at all.
