0455 code and bad hoses

ok, there are some older threads around, eg.

http://jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177164

But I just found a variant, and since it doesn't seem to be a current topic of conversation, I hope it is OK to revive this one briefly.

This concerns a 2001 Cherokee Sport 4.0L 4x4.

So as in the above thread I get code 0455 EVAP system detected - Gross leak

I took the advice mentioned and eventually found the right lines to follow from the purge solenoid - frankly I am not all that impressed with any of the hardware used in these models, it seems like they are barely scraping by on quality.

If you have problems finding the offending joints, follow the plastic hose from the solenoid across the firewall to the drivers side, from there one of the pair of hoses goes to the manifold (I think) the other goes *down* - that's the iffy one, the first rubber join is about halfway down behind the engine - watch out for that exhaust manifold (mine was hot!)

The second is under the body, get on your back and scoot!

My first clue should have been that the metal pipe between the two rubber ones was not snapped into it's mounting clip (this is actually a common problem on my car - I think I got a Monday model! Lots of missing tiedowns and snaps and clips). The next thing I noticed is that even though this was the case, my short rubber hoses are actually fine! But I couldn't get the metal pipe into it's clip, it seemed the whole assembly was out of position, plus I still hadn't found my leak.

Traced the hose back along the underside, it is tied to an adjacent hose (larger diameter) at regular intervals, which is snapped into mountings (surprise).

Eventually the two hoses end up at what I believe is my carbon canister - someone correct me if I am wrong - it is mounted under a shield near the rear axle.

At the end of that long plastic hose run, there is a 90 degree connection to the canister inlet - with, you guessed it - another piece of rubber hose, which because of the metal pipe being out of it's mount, and the whole hose being secured in slightly the wrong position, was under major stress (the rubber hose).

It had split at the canister inlet, causing the gross leak. TaDa!

Of course, it's late, and I have to wait until tomorrow to go get the hose to replace the busted piece, but I'll let you know if it goes well~!!!

BTW I will try and remember to take piccies, but I am noob so I can't post them yet.....

Here is a pic of where I found my offending leak...

sounds like what i need to do. let me know if that was the problem. i just need to find the time to do it or the money to pay someone to do it.
if you can post the pics it'd be great.

BTW, hows your gas mileage? mine is about 11.5 around town and i'm wondering if this will cure that or maybe its something else.

After the fix....

OK, so sorry about the wait, here is the link for the piccies:

http://s154.photobucket.com/albums/s280/bitbrat/

And just to let you know, after doing the fix, I went down to the local auto parts store, got the codes reset, found I also had 0303 which is misfire on 3 - but I think I know what that is - there's a thread around somewhere about vapor locks in the injectors on restart of a warm engine..... that's another story.

topcop38 - My gas mileage has always been about the quoted.... 14/19 (city/highway) with obvious variations dependimng on driving "style" and conditions - got to test that recently, went from dayton ohio to New Orleans - got about 21 mpg on one leg so far as I can calculate!

If you're getting lower than expected you may have something else up too...? I am not the guy to ask, but as far as I know, the EVAP system is not likely to be responsible for more than 1 or 2 mpg (someone else told me that....anyone want to comment on the accuracy of that statement?)

So a couple of days later, I looked down, and lo and behold, the damn light was back on! I don't own a code reader so I will have to go round to Auto-whatever again and ask them to read it for me.

Strangely, I cannot read my codes from the dash - I have one of the last 2001s made, version 2.5 analog dash with digital ODO - I can make it self test, but nothing else? Anyone???

OK gotta go - maybe I need to look closer at those other two joins again - won't know till I check the codes.......

piccies

Hmmm, so I can post piccies!!

Looking from the front:

This is the soldenoid, and shows the hoses heading off across the firewall

Looking down from the drivers side you will see:

Laying on your back under the car you should find this:

If you follow everything back toward the gas tank (still on your back!):

And finally, the piece of c**p removed for your inspection:

(edit) damn, wrong..... oh well - there are the individual piccy links (/edit)
