Trying to track down a noise that seems to be coming from around the Crank Pulley. Did some online searching for videos and can't find the exact sound. Its not a squeak or high pitched sound. More like a loud clank/rumble. Looked closely at the crank pulley with a flashlight with the engine running. Might be some slight wobble but not much. Harmonic Balancer and sections of pulley don't seem un-aligned or anything.
Is there a seal or bearing that could be wearing out?
May try and record the sound and see if I can post a link to that. Maybe someone with a good ear and more knowledge than I can suggest what it is.
Thanks. That was what I thought might be culprit at first but that wouldn't make the kind of sound I am hearing. Sounded more like a bearing. I broke down and took to my Jeep Dealer that we've bought many Jeeps from, and their mechanic did a diagnostic on all the pulleys after taking the serpentine belt off. Turned out to be the Water Pump. Bearings were going and it was also throwing off the belt a touch.
Running through vids right now trying to determine if I want to attempt the repair. Dealer wants over $600 to do the work. I don't think so. My regular mechanic less than 1/2 that though I'll be supplying parts. $33.00 for a Duralast Pump (lifetime warranty) and just under $40.00 for a Serpentine belt, which needed replacing anyway. Looks like a pain to do on the 2001. But it is heading close to 100 degrees this week here in Charlotte.
One very interesting thing. I found out that there was still an active recall for an Intake Manifold Debris-Shield for this 2001! I bought this Jeep from this dealer many years ago but haven't had them do any work on it since. They have ordered the part and will replace for free when it comes in.
You can substitute a long screwdriver, or even just a piece of metal rod, like a long socket extension. Hold one end to your ear, and CAREFULLY! touch various parts with the other end. You will know when you hit the offending part. A section of hose MAY also work, but works better for finding vacuum leaks and the like than it does for noises like this.
Cruiser, glad to see that you are teaching her at least basic mechanical skills!
