U-Haul pick up truck

Well I have yet another towing question and yet again it involves U-Haul. I have come down to three options on what to do about my Jeep.
1. I can buy a tiny trailer for my Jeep haul the trail tires in it to the trail and swap them out there $2500 - $3000
2. I can buy an old 2wd truck and use it solely as a tow rig $3000 - $5000
3. Rent a 14’ U-Haul truck and flat car hauler and deal with possibly very tight trail heads $166 per day
4. Maybe rent a U-Haul pick up truck and car hauler $75 per day

I listed the problems with 1 – 3 already but I am not sure if the pick up truck they have could tow the Jeep. They list it as a V8 but the woman I talked to said she thinks it is a F150, she did not sound too sure. Anyone have any experience with these trucks and if it is not a F250 should I not even bother?

Do they allow you to tow with the pickup? I didnt thing they did. The u-haul trailer has surge brakes, so the more eight you can put in front of it, the better.

Buying an old truck to Tow with in that price range makes me believe there will be more expenses shortly down the road after a few tows.

When I called the woman said the only way I could do a local rental with one of their trucks and the car hauler is if i do use the pick up. The box trucks are one way only. But I can just pick it up in one town and drop off in another so no big deal there.

Maybe a bit off topic, but why do you need to trailer it? If its gearing why not re-gear, if you are worried about breakage, why not find out about uhauls where you are going to be near, then if need be go rent one.

I am mostly looking at putting it on a trailer because of distance. I run two sets of tires BFG AT for DD and Super Swamper LTB for trail use. Some of the trails I want to go on are an hour + drive, some even over 8. I know some guys will drive the LTBs that far but I rather not if there is another option.

The pick ups here are long bed F150's. If its got the 5.4 it should be able to pull your jeep. How about a tow dolley? Leave your LTB's on the front and put the BFG on the rear and put the other LTBS in the truck.

If I am going to tow I rather have none of the axels spinning. If I went the dolly method I would probably just go to a flat tow set up and used one of my other trucks. But the idea had crossed my mind. I will have to look up the tow rating on those F150s.

I can't remember what the exact rating but I know my F150 is within the ratings for towing my jeep on a trailer (2000 F150 4x4 short box reg cab 4.6L triton V8)

Why not get a cheap utility trailer to tow LTB's??

I just bought a 5 x 11 for $300 used.

Or did you want it enclosed for security?

Just a thought.

the two uhaul trucks i've rented were f150, long bed, with the smaller v8, not the big triton 5.4
they will allow you to tow with them if you're renting their trailer to tow with

I would like an enclosed trailer do to he security of it. And it looks like if it is the smaller F150 it wouldn’t be a good idea to tow my Jeep with it. My Jeep will either be too heavy or right on the edge of the limits.

Those uhaul car trailers are HEAVY, and rated by uhaul for probably 1/4 of what they should be. I've pulled heavier loads than just the uhaul trailer behind my f150 w/5.4, but I knew that trailer was back there before I ever loaded it. I can't imagine the smaller engine with highway gears pulling that trailer and a vehicle would be very fun.
