Towing with a xj

i have a 2001 xj i am towing a 3400lb pop up trailer with it. it seems to tow this wieght easily. i have a large tranny cooler, brake controller, and sway control on it. is anyone else towing with an xj and is this too heavy for my rig. let me know your thoughts and wisdom as i will be towing cross country with this in the fall.

I have a regular camper about that weight. I pulled it with an 01 Grand. It was horrid. I have a 4Runner now and it is much better. It might not be the weight that was the issue, it could have height of my trailer. Even towing much lighter weights in a 6X12 covered cargo trailer sucked with my Grand, my TJ pulled it fine. If I drove even 60 it felt like the trailer was pushing me around.

Not sure what the max weight for an XJ is but my grand was 5k.

If it is set up correctly, you should be fine. The Cherokee with the factory towing package is rated to tow 5000# if you use a load distributing hitch. I tow a 2700 pound travel trailer with mine, need to add a load distributing hitch to reduce a little sag, but it is not that bad... but it tows it fine. I would have no problem towing this long distance.

Oh and my trailer is set up with electric brakes and a controller as well. I added the trans cooler and a gauge and it never gets hot. load handling and towability really depends on how well you load the trailer and how well you are set up to tow. If one or the other is not just right... it might suck, if they are both set up correctly, it is a walk in the park.
