Towing TJ with XJ

Planning a trip out to CO in late august. It is about a 1600 mile round trip. With gas prices the way they are, I was thinking about towing options. I know, mileage will go down with towing, but for arguements sake...

Flat tow a TJ with XJ...smart? all interstate the whole way, but could get a bit dicey.

Dolly tow...seems like it might be more stable, a little less rough of a ride. Do dolly's come with brakes? also don't have to worry about wiring up the tj.

Looking at 1600 miles at average of 18 mpg and $4 gas...$355 dollars for the trip.

I don't think I would want to tow a whole other vehicle with the XJ. Especially for that long of a trip. Think of the weight of the TJ and the weight of the trailer in relation to your towing capacity. If it was my XJ towing my TJ for that long of a trip I would say no way.

I think you would be surprised how bad the gas mileage will be with a flat tow behind that XJ. My suburban gets 12mpg by itself, 5-7 with a load. When all is said and done, flat towing may not save you all that much. I'd be surprised if you got better than 10mpg with a TJ behind that XJ. And, then there is the danger. Not that the danger would stop me, since I towed a laundry machine around on casters with a yellow strap. But, its something to think about. It won't stop very well with the flat tow. A dolly won't help. And the brake contraption (which I would never even consider) will cost you an arm and a leg.

Again, I question the gas savings. I'd drive them both out there. Take your tow bar and if you have any road trouble you will be in a better position to handle it.

I would be concerned about being pulled over.

You'll never average 18 mpg in your XJ towing a TJ. My XJ can barely get in the high teens on it's own. I just averaged 12.5 mpg with my Ram pulling a 6000 lb 30 ft. travel trailer yesterday.

That would be a lot of stress on the XJ, being that the TJ weighs more.
