Tow rig build up, 1986 GMC 1-ton dually

Well guys, here it is.
A 1986 GMC 3500, 56,000 miles, 454, turbo 400 tranny, 1-ton rear axle, 5th wheel setup, and frame mounted hitch. I will start a build thread on it. I have BIG plans for this truck.

Nice, that is screaming 4x4 swap with 12v Cummins and 6 speed.

Kenbo-Slice 11-16-2009 08:24 PM

Haha, I don't need 4-wheel for this. The Cummins and 6-speed sound good to me though, haha!

Nice, I used to tow with a 83 that looked almost identical but red.

-I need to replace-
both fuel tanks ($100 each)
windshield (about $200 installed)
rear tires (about $280 for 4 treadwrite 235-85-16's)
battery (maybe)
Other than that, it is all cosmetic.

Kenbo-Slice 11-19-2009 08:58 PM

Nevermind, I just ordered fuel tanks. Brand new 16 gallon tanks for $32.70 each. Thank you internet!

Here are a couple pics of the truck today. I decided to drop both fuel tanks, so when the new ones arrive, I can just throw them in.

If you are in NY you will want and need 4WD.

Need? Not at all. Want? I didn't.... I was looking for a 2wd. At least for what I'm going to be doing with it. I will only drive it about once a week (if that) and I only bought it to tow the Jeep. The club I'm in really only has scheduled rides in the spring, summer and fall. During the winter the calendar is pretty bare. Plus, I have plowed snow in a dually that broke a front drive shaft in the middle of a storm. I pushed snow all night with just a sander in the bed. With a little weight, it is amazing how well a 2wd dually does in snow.

Nice, what'd you wind up paying for that bad boy, if you dont mind me asking.

I want a tow rig... but im not sure wether or not to buy a daily driver tow rig, or buy a cheap tow rig, and a little gas saver car to drive back and forth to work everyday to save some cash.

Kenbo-Slice 12-13-2009 05:23 PM

I picked this up for $2600. I figure with how straight the body is, how clean it is underneath and only 56,000 miles on the clock it was a decent deal. When I get back from Canada on the 30th I'll have a few days to tinker with it before I go back to work. I contemplated getting a DD/tow rig but I didn't want to spend over $4000 and finding a reliable DD/ tow rig with less than 100,000 miles would be tough. Plus I am planning on making this quite the "hot rod". The 454 calls my name!!

SWEET, old schooling it.

Kenbo-Slice 12-19-2009 07:22 AM

Yessir. Old schoolin it indeed!

Comanche_ 12-31-2009 05:07 AM

What are the hot rod ideas?

10:1 compression, towing/ semi agressive cam, all the head work, intake, big carb, headers and duel (straight?) sidepipes?:rofl:
