Tow auto trans in neutral?

Towing a TJ, Auto Trans., 200 mi. this weekend on a Uhaul dolly. Uhaul says the drive shaft must be removed. Other folks telling me it's OK to tow with the trans. in Neutral. Which is it? I don't want to destroy the trans. on the way home, but if it won't hurt to put it in Neutral... Why would Uhaul tell me to remove the driveshaft? Thanks

Check your manual. It will tell you to put the transfer case selector in neutral and the transmission in Park. U-Haul is run by morons and crooks.

I'm making the trip to purchase the Jeep, so I don't have a manual. I called the local Jeep dealership today and the say drop the driveshaft. Thanks

Your dealer is a moron too.

Pages 248-250 from the 2006 TJ manual:

Just note that it says NOT to use a dolly!!!! Unless you have a few grand to repair your new Jeeps t-case or tranny. Use a frame-mounted towbar.

You may have to drop the rear drive shaft if using a dolly. Why you say? Because with many versions of the 231 transfer case there is not a "true" neutral. What that means is when the t-case is in neutral it is disconnected from the transmission and from power. BUT, the front and rear are still connected. Test it by jacking all 4 wheels off the ground and with the tcase in N spin one of the tires and see what happens to the others.

The references above scanned from the manual are for flat towing but the same issues apply if you have a lunchbox locker in the front and are flat towing

Your mileage may vary but it's easy to test it.

As easy as it is to drop the drive shaft, I would drop it and be on my way, to me it would be a no brainer,
