Thinking long term... Good vehicle setup to trailer the heep?

At some point I would like to pick up a used vehicle to trailer the 2004 TJ. At that point I expect the heep will have grown into that role. It should weigh substantially more with its amror, full roll cage, bumpers, winch, upgraded axles, and lets not forget the 35-37" tires on 17's.

I would like a used vehicle that can comfortably fit 4-5 people, or me the wife, and the mutts. A vehicle that is known for its reliability, is easy to work on (meaning you can crawl in the engine, you dont have to take apart entire engine to get to simple stuff like water pump, the less moving parts the better type mentality), and a large availability of cheap and easy to find parts. Of course it would be nice to not have to work on it at all, but if I do I would like it to be as little a pain in the a$$ as possible.

Obviously it needs to be able to tow the heep without problem, the most inexpensive solution is also sought, and of course the most fuel efficient would be nice.

When mentioning vehicle please provide specific years, or year ranges, since we all know every model has their good years, and their bad years!

When you say MPG, I'll assume you mean while towing. A 1999 & newer Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 with the Cummins diesel and quad or crew cab will give you lots of room for the family and lots of power to pull whatever you desire.

Either a 7.3 Ford or Dodge with a Cummins. Both trucks are great.

just spend the cash and get a new 2011 FORD 6.7 power stroke that thing is NASTY...

A clean 01-early 03 Ford with the 7.3. Add a nice tune from DB Tuner, a set of guages, air and exhaust improvements and possibly a 31 row trans cooler from a 6.0 truck and run it. Ignore the 6.0 engine at all costs. Next choice would be an 02-later Dodge with the Cummins. The interior of the Superduty offers more room but the Cummins is a great motor. Next, the Duramax. Good motor thru the years but there are several different variations of it. Allison is a good trans as well. But, the IFS is barely adequate and will need $2k in repairs (bushings,bearings,steering etc.) in 50k or less miles depending on tire size. Sorry GM, but your front ends suck..
By all means, get the DIESEL motor in whatever you buy. I have an 01 PSD F350 that has been an excellent truck. Wouldn't trade it for nothing. I have watched my buddies go thru Fords, Duramaxes, and Dodges and I've always just hung onto my 01.

This. My mom has a 2005 with the 6.0 and it's a piece of crap. The rest of the truck is nice (King Ranch) but the motor has nothing but problems.

That's a lot like saying, "upgrading to an S35 kit is polishing a turd and should be avoided at all costs"...something that sounds good if all you know is what you've read on the internet or a limited sample.

Like most things, it really depends. The 6.0 on my '07 F250 has been fantastic (now 155k miles). You just need to keep up with the maintenance, making sure you keep clean oil in it, as oil drives everything in it, basically. Also, it does help to get the '07 (or '06 earliest) as they worked out some of the kinks from the earlier years. Don't chip it, though. Leave it stock.

For what it's worth, I drive a 2003 F-250 6.0L crewcab bought new and now with 103,000mi.

Only had two problems: A sensor that was a pain to replace due to the location but is fairly innocuous itself and having to replace the tie-rod ends, which DOES seem to be an issue with this truck.

All the 6.0L engine problems others rant about: Haven't seen 'em. Just lucky I guess.

fix a 6.0... replace all the head bolts w block studs and upgrade the gaskets. A LOT of the 6.0 problems are caused by aftermarket tuners... remember before you bash me i said "a lot" not all, kuz the 6.0 does have issues. I don't think i'd buy one

Wow... sign me up that kind of a trip! The modern trucks are really amazing. I have to say Fords have a great ride.

Now my father-in-law has an '04 Cummins 2500 Ram 2500 that he tows a 40 ft. trailer with and it's been very reliable for him. It's doesn't sweat at all towing over the Rockies.

I am getting a 99 f250 with the Z-6 speed trans WAHOOO! That or get a excursion with the 7.3 in it

Thanks for the replies! The Ford with the 7.3 sounds like its a popular choice, and it looks like it retains its value well!

I know someone that had Ford 250, not sure if he had 7.3, but he had some kind of injector problem what was expensive as hell to fix 2K+... I also know someone with excursion with the 7.3, that had same problem. Has anyone heard of this, and is this something that effects certain years, models, engines?

Also, what kinda miles, price range should I be looking at at for a good deal?

When pricing last night, I ran across this local ad, it made me laugh, so I thought I would share. Look towards bottom of ad!
