question about tandem towing laws

i have a question about tandem towing laws in Illinois and Indiana.

my plan:
2500HD silverado in front towing a 16' deck over trailer with a yj on it equipped with trailer brakes and behind that would be another stock yj being flat towed off a hitch on the back of the trailer

from what i'm reading this would be legal in these two states but i'm not sure if a CDL would be needed. the combined weight is less than 26,000 lbs but being that it is a double trailer type setup i'm not sure how that works.

thank you for your input.

Call the DOT, it's different in each state. I looked into it as well and found that no commercial licensing is required for recreational use. If you put a machine or any type of equipment on the trailer you are commercial then and need a CDL and double endorsements. Your flat towed jeep will need a braking system to be legally towed. The only other issue is total length, but you won't go over the max length with that set up. If you've ever been out west you will see it a lot. Pretty rare in our area though. Good luck!

Thank you, I'm still debating though we'll probably just take 2 tow rigs to avoid the hassle. I don't want to have to try and explain to the police why it's legal if I'm not sure what I'm talking about

Probably sent from under my broken heep

I have seen it done here in Calif, but also have seen the state patrol give folks headaches over this.

The first trailer can't be a bumper pull. Watch your max length too.

Buy my transmission cooler. Derale TJ cooler.
