Question about my 2000 TJ 4.0L and towing. Help

My wife and I will be making our second trip to Moab Utah from Owensboro Ky in October. Last year we bought our first Jeep and we love it. We bought a used 2000 TJ 4.0L automatic with 40,000 miles and I started a virtual rebuild before we left for Moab and it performed nearly flawlessly.
I want to tow my 4-wheeler this year. It weighs aprox 675lb wet. The trailer I will use is approximately 400lb. I'm guessing max tow weight of approximately 1200 lb with luggage, fuel tanks, and other misc items.
Our mileage was horrible without the trailer and will only be worse with a tow. Trip miles are 1400 one way. Total expected trip miles will be around 4,500.

Has anyone experience with towing long distances with the TJ and how terrible was your mileage? Did the TJ struggle?

Please help. Thanks

if you fill out your profile it would let us know what gears and other stuff you are running.

I suspect that you are running stock 3.07 gears, combined w/ 33" tires it's going to suck. The best thing you can do is to re-gear.

Of course the more weight you are carrying the worse the gas mileage is going to be. I'd say it's worth it though.

^I wouldn't listen to what I say. I don't know what I'm talking about. Please use the search feature.

Depending on the gears that are in it right now you might have some problems with the long hill climbs. Other than that you are in the rated weight for towing with that rig just keep it safe. As for MPG you have a jeep basically a brick on wheels so don't expect to get decent MPG I will guess around 8-12 MPG depending how hard you drive it.

I have a 2000 TJ with the 4.0 and if I don't go too fast I do okay pulling a trailer. About 14-15 mpg. But I also have 4.10 gears which probably help quite a bit.
