OD Towing with deeper gears?

So Wranglers are not good for towing to begin with, but I've been thinking about a small utility (or offroad ) trailer lately for camping.

That said, I have a 91 YJ 4.0 AX15 231J 8.8@4:10.

If I re-gear to 4.88 would towing a 500lb - 1500lb trailer be too much for the overdrive? Should I just stay in 4th gear?

My RPM's would be screaming in 4th with 4.88's I would think?

Hoping that someone that knows powertrain/ gears can shed some light on this. I searched and could not find the answer to my question.

thank you

With the ax15 it doesn't matter if you tow in OD or not. With 35s and 4.88s the jeep would have more power to the ground than you do currently with 4.10s. Will it not tow 1klbs in 5th currently? The "dont tow in OD" is for older automatics because they use fluid pressure to drive the output shaft. AX15 is gear to gear contact.

Your trailer will be no problem with either gearing.

Not using OD or having special transmission settings (button on the dash) are for towing with autos to keep them from shifting to much and overheating the trans. With a manual you just go with what feels fight.

I have TJ with NV3500, 35s, and 4.88s. Almost the same setup as you. I tow my 4-wheeler on a utility trailer. Total weight might be 1k lbs. it does fine. If you can use 5th use it, if not don't. It's better to rev the engine a little than to lug it. 4.88s with 35s is pretty close to stock gearing. Regearing from 3.73s to 4.88s was the best mod I've made. I actually enjoy driving my Jeep everyday again.
