I need to get a 3"x20' strap sometime soon. Any givin rainy day around here you can see 2-3 cars hydroplaned into the ditch. Last time there was an H1 out there pulling them out. And my brother in law pulls people out in his Bronco all the time, he uses about a 4"x20' he got from work.

a 4x20 strap? what's a 4" strap rated for? A guy I wheeled with once had a 6" strap, that was actually doubled over. So it was originally 12", then doubled over itself to make a 6" strap. overkill or playing safe?

if you NEED a 4+ inch wide recovery strap then you need to reconsider the recovery method at hand... if a 2 or 3" strap won't do the job then it's likely a job for a winch...
-Erik <-- would rather snap a 2 or 3" strap then bend my lil jeep frame playing tug of war with a 4+ inch wide strap

Looks like a nice strap. I picked my offbrand strap up for $18 at Menards. I am probably going to return it though and maybe pick up one of these instead!

Nice strap, love that color.
Polyester straps are 9000 per inch. A 4" strap has appx 36000 breaking strength, working load of about a third of that. Just the right size for a Hummer, Unimog (like mine), or a full size pick up.
I agree that if you can't use a 3" strap on a Jeep, you better get the winch working. Be sure to have a nice place to tie off the Jeep, though, and use your 3" as an anchor and a tree strap for the back of the recovery vehicle.

I don't recall the exact amount but I do recall my bill was just slightly over $60.00. So I would say roughly about $7.00.

Nice strap for sure, but question: where do you hook that on cars?

Tow points make recovery easy and a lot of cars have them, but when they don't all bets are off. Pulling a vehicle up out of a ditch or even out of a serious snow bank can do some really serious damage. One of my kids was at a party where some kids strapped a new Mitsubishi product out of a wet field and did 8000 of mechanical damage to it. Thankfully, it wasn't my kid behind the wheel. I saw some guys off road pull the front axle right off a vehicle with a strap around the axle.
Answer to your question is that you always use a loop strap with D shackles when there is no tow point, but the best approach is not to yank on anything that wasn't designed to be yanked on.
Here's the famous utube video that illustrates this:

If a jeeper does not have front tow hooks installed, where do you hook it up?

I've seen a guy use a hook-ended strap attatched to the sway bar of a WJ to get it out of a ditch. He didn't yank it and it didn't take much force, so there was really no risk of the hooks flying off.
So long as you've got a D-Ring and a looped strap, doesn't every Jeep have a sway bar? Gotta go under or through a hole in the bumper though to reach it, so there's risk of some damage depending on the angle and force of the pull.

Hahaha yeah thats great. Now as far as recovery with a strap, why do I always read to put newspaper or something inbetween so the strap doesnt get permanently stuck on there? Is it really that hard to get off once its been tugged on?
Also, the cheapest I have found for shackles was 4 for $40. Is that reasonable? How many do I really need?
