my offroad trailer build starts NOW

over the weekend I picked up an old military trailer that I will be turning into a camping/ offroad trailer

here are some pics...

I will start out by trying to weld the floor pan up to make it pretty sturdy. Any ideas on what I should do about the floor pan?

I will also weld the rest of the tub up and make it as leak proof as I can.

Then I will make a top for it that will be lifted to the side and will seal out most of the water. I will make a frame out of square tube and cover it with thick canvas.

These ideas are just the start. popup tent, propane, stoves, and a ton more will come after I clean it up a little bit.

Give me some ideas!

That's a heck of a price you got it for! I was looking for something like that, but I've decided to make a small trailer out of the spare parts CJ7 I have. I'm interested to see how you do your tube frame top with canvas. Have you already got a supplier lined out for the canvas material?

yep went up to the military surplus store yesterday and bought it.

I got the idea of the tube frame with canvas stretched over it from someone else. I will find it....

I am going to buy a sand blaster tonight and get to work on this thing

kind of like this. I might lay sheet metal over it also to make it a little more sturdy and more leak proof...

Matt, that's pretty nice. One thing that had always deterred me from getting a Wrangler was the lack of room for my camping gear. You've definitely found a way around this.

yep that is one reason I sold my TJ

My 4 door JK has more than enough room for camping gear though.

Congrads on the purchase. Wow for picking something like that for that price at the local surplus.

There is this other expedition-type forum out there that has lots of information which you are looking for. There is even a Toyota forum as well. Then there is the specific military forum with details to restorations.

Yes. I'm a member of 2 local 4wd clubs and associated to other localized 4wd club forums. KC4WDA and KCJeep are the 2 clubs. Both have a trailride and meeting once a month. Both clubs have a variance in builds and driver experience in its membership. Both mostly have the same group of riders at trailrides and that makes it all fun.

There is not a thing close to KC to wheel. So KanRocks was developed and founded. Its open on weekends from volunteers and has a user fee. It is 83 miles from my driveway. Tuttle Creek is the next closest. It is NE of Manhattan, KS. It is little over 2hr drive for me, free to users, open daily and controlled by volunteers and clubs, but ultimately, the Army Corp has last stand. Then there is Disney, OK which is about 4 hrs from me. SMORR (Southern Missouri OffRoad Ranch) is a great place to wheel and is 5 hrs from me. Lots of land, variance of trails, camping, fantastic shower house, cook food, etc. for a small fee.

Looking forward to meeting you. I'm membership liaison for KC4WDA.
